Samoa
Samoa (formerly Western Somoa) joined the Commonwealth
in 1970. It is an archipelago of nine islands at the
centre of south-west Pacific island groups. The name
Samoa, from 'Sa' (sacred) and 'Moa' (centre) means
'Sacred Centre of the Universe'.
The country made it's Commonwealth Games debut in
1974 and have only missed the 1986 edition since that
time. Boxing and weightlifting medals were the highlight
of their inaugural Games in Christchurch.
The Samoa National Olympic Committee is responsible
for organising the country's participation in the
Commonwealth Games. The same body was successful for
winning the right to host the 2007 South Pacific Games
in their capital, Apia.
